I can’t stand the hype that the high school band gets. I can’t stand that people call the music room the “band room”. I don’t like that, in every movie or television show that you see in which this applies, there is a school band, but you would never even know that the orchestra even exists. I’m not saying that I want orchestra to get undying praise and attention. But recognition would be nice.
That being said, I think the band has it so much easier, in terms of musical ability.
I know that it’s still an amazing feat to conquer those instruments. Anyone who can create such a divine sound must be extremely talented. But stringed instruments are a whole other story. There’s a reason that I started school orchestra in the fourth grade and band started in fifth. We needed an extra year just to compete. Woodwind and brass have most everything laid out for them, and though there can be intonation problems, it’s nowhere near as difficult as with strings. It’s a wild guess, for us. We have no set order of keys that we press to produce a certain sound. We have to find and pinpoint that exact sound by ourselves, and even just a few millimeters off can make a difference in intonation. It isn’t quite the easiest thing in the world to commit to memory the length of all four strings and the location of every possible pitch that can be played with nothing to go off of but habit and subconscious knowledge of approximately where everything is. That’s actually the perfect word to describe it. Approximate.
I’m not gonna lie. In concerts, the orchestra sounds like shit compared to the band. Why do you think that is? Even playing as a group is so much more difficult, and you can just hear it. I’m pretty sure that not every band in the world just has better musicians than every orchestra in world. It’s a matter of how complex both groups are, and the difficulty of how to work together to make a clean sound.
So, yeah. It kind of sucks that orchestra just gets kicked under the rug. Every year we have the concert involving both the band and the orchestra of the district’s middle schools and our high school, the band is always the grand finale. The band gets the biggest applause. I can’t help but feel like we get pity applause, in comparison.
It’s pretty lame.
No disrespect to band kids, but I totally agree with the above^^
I spent a lot of today working on this. The picture’s blurry, but the scanner would have made it look worse.
This is Kelly! My
best friendsister and she is amazing, so I drew her. (:Jordan kinda inspired me to do this, sorta.
Oh my god Michela I’m jealous of your skills! DRAW ME. Loljk I’m not one of those annoying people who would do that XD But anyway, THIS IS AMAZING.
